The sports world meets a global pandemic. On February 19, 2020, at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, Atalanta (Italy) played against Valencia (Spain) in a Champions League match. That day, 40,000 fans packed the stadium, while many others in both countries watched from bars and restaurants. This match became known as the “Ground Zero” game. In the following days and weeks, Spain and Italy became pandemic hotspots.
By March 11, 2020, the NBA paused its basketball season after a Utah Jazz player tested positive for COVID-19, following advice from the CDC. The next day, another teammate tested positive. Sports leagues everywhere took action, canceling seasons and postponing events. Social distancing rules were put in place, and restaurants started offering curbside services.
In 2024, COVID-19 no longer overshadows sporting events, bars, or restaurants. By 2023, travel destinations adapted, encouraging widespread travel. The virus persists but is managed with vaccines, social distancing, and a more laid-back approach, reflecting our gained knowledge. We’ve even embraced the extended playing time for college athletes through the “Covid-Year” allowance, which will soon be a thing of the past.
